What Do We Owe Each Other

Bootleg - 1st Demo - Live at the Mearbel

    0:00

in 2010 we decided to record a demo before getting into the studio for recording a new album.

We went to the Mearbel studio for a 1 day session, playing live 10 songs, for bout 6 hours.

Each song was played 3-4 and at the end we picked the best performance for each song.

Then Eyal Shindler the owner of the Mearbel mixed the songs, about 1-2 hours each.

As you can see only 3 songs from this demo made it to the new album, but this demo remains as a documentation of live performance, recorded in a high quality studio, so we got the energy of a live show with the sound of a professional studio. No other Panic recording was made lie that so we find this recording to be very special.

The songs:

1. Boo : Boo is Yael's song, written and composed by her. She thought that we should play some more fun songs at the show and suggested this one. We all loved it so we learned it and arranged it together and it had become maybe the most beloved live song, where the band really uses the full power of all instruments playing together. The song was not recorded to the new album, by the time of this demo and the CD yael has released this song on her solo album. But here is the chance to listen to Panic's version of Boo.

2. The Oldest Woman : another live show favorite, this complicated yet enjoyable song did not fit to the musical direction of the new album. Still, like Boo, it shows the great vibes of the band playing together, to the lyrics of Karen Alkalay Gut, this is the chance to listen to this song in studio quality.

3. El Ginat Egoz was a song composed by Roy Yarkoni to the lyrics of Varda Genosar to a special event of Varda's new book release. The song was performed by Roy and Yael, and later they thought it could work for Panic. So we recorded it in this demo, performed it live in one show, but finally gave up on Hebrew lyrics, and went to more alternative sound, with English lyrics. This is the only recording of this song.

4. a Charm to Sooth Withdrawal : This song came out at the new record, very similar to this version.

5+6  On This Night : This song was recorded in our first album. When we recoded that album we had no drummer in the band, and after the CD was released Giori has joined us and songs became more energetic and rockish with the drums. Also in live shows people really liked this song and we felt we need to play an introduction based on the verse chords, before the song begins, So this recording is very different form the one in the first album.

7. Flying: This song was a must for the new record, but in the time passed from this demo to the CD, we cut the C part of the song to make it simpler in structure, and also to avoid mentioning "dying" in this optimistic song. Karen didn't like this change, only after the launch show of the new CD she said she for the first time understands why we did it. But for Karen, and for music complexity funds - here is the version with the full lyrics.

8. Sodom: This song also had a very complicated C part which was dropped out just before the demo recording. We all love it very much and it was a must for the new album.

9. Thoughts: this song didn't make it to the first and the second album, both times we were not pleased with the result. This is the only studio recording so far of thoughts, one of our most beloved songs.

10. What do we owe each other: This song appeared on our first CD and after Giori joined us we change it completely form a dark song to Trip hop song with a constant groove. The part where all the boys starts humming and the music opened is one of our favorites. We recorded this version to the new CD but we had to let some songs out of the album so we choose this one since it was already recorded on the past.
